Body found in burnt house in Tasmania's north

A body has been found in a fire-damaged home in George Town in the Tasmania's north.

Detectives and fire investigators attended the house fire in Stonehouse Street on Saturday.

The body is that of a male aged in his 30s, police said.

It is understood the man lived in the house, and that he died from smoke inhalation.

Police believe he lit a candle in his room on Friday and fell asleep, and the candle fell over starting a fire that caused the room to fill with smoke.

Firefighters were called to the house fire just before 10:00am.

The fire did not take hold and was contained to one room.
