Police searching for a missing woman in Brisbane's north have found a body in a box at an apartment block in Hamilton.

The death is being treated as suspicious and homicide detectives are investigating.

The body was discovered inside a storage box at the waterfront unit on level three of the Newport Hamilton Apartments block.

The ABC understands police found the body late on Monday afternoon while they were searching the complex for a missing woman who lived there.

"The gender of the deceased person is unknown," Detective Inspector Tim Trezise said on Tuesday morning.

Forensic officers have been at the apartment block throughout the night and detectives have been speaking to neighbours in the complex and nearby.

One neighbour told the ABC police were asking for CCTV footage of the nearby area dating back to April.

A 26-year-old man connected to the apartment was located in NSW and arrested.

He is due to appear in Sutherland Local Court today where detectives will seek his extradition to Queensland.

An investigation centre has been established at Hendra Police station.
