Body found in body of water in Kilwinning following 'unexplained' death

A BODY of a woman has been found in a "body of water" in the North Ayrshire town of Kilwinning.

It comes after a report of a heavy police presence near the River Garnock over the past couple of days.

Local reports also suggest that the path adjacent to the river, which runs through the town, has been closed off by officers during this time.

Police say they were called to an area off of Kilwinning's Bankhead Road, following the discovery of a body within a body of water on the afternoon of Thursday, January 19.

They have also confirmed that the body was that of a woman - with the death currently being treated as unexplained.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to an area off Bankhead Road in Kilwinning at around 1.45pm on Thursday, 19 January, 2023 following the discovery of a body within the water.

“The body of a woman was recovered with the death being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
