Body found following fatal fire at home of Airdrie man John McGuigan

A body has been discovered following a devastating house fire in Airdrie.

Police have confirmed a body was found in the burned-out shell of the building following the blaze on Ewart Drive on Saturday.

Formal identification is still to take place however police say there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

It comes after we told how friends and relatives were searching for John McGuigan, who has not been seen since the fire destroyed his home.

A worried family member had urged anyone who had spotted John to come forward, writing: “If anyone has heard from John McGuigan (Bulb) or knows where he is....please get in contact ASAP.

“Also keep an eye out for his silver Ford Focus estate car, ladders on the roof."

Following the blaze just after 3am on Saturday, eight occupants of the nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution.

One eyewitness told the Daily Record the house had been "obliterated".

One local shared an image of the devastation on Twitter, showing a property gutted by the inferno.

DS Mark Nelson, from Coatbridge CID, said: “A joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire is still ongoing. At this stage there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

"Emergency services are also continuing efforts to ensure the safety of the damaged house and the surrounding properties.”
