Body found during search for missing dad Declan Reid after tragic kayaking accident

A body has been found during the search for a dad missing after a tragic kayaking accident.

Declan Reid had been kayaking with his son beside his childhood home when the vessel capsized on the River Barrow at Ardreigh Lock, in Athy, Co Kildare last Sunday.

The 34-year-old managed to reach his eight-year-old son and keep him afloat before he got the attention of a passing teenage boy.

The youth dived into the water and rescued the boy and carried him as far as the riverbank where he was treated by paramedics.

But when the teen returned for Mr Reid, the father had disappeared.

An extensive search of the river has been ongoing for several days, but has now been stood down following the discovery of a body.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Athy have recovered the body of a male, aged in his 30s, this afternoon following a search operation in the River Barrow, Co. Kildare which commenced on 28th February 2021.

"At approximately 4pm, Gardaí from the Sub-Aqua Unit recovered the body from the water.

"The body of the male remains at the scene and the local Coroner has been notified.

"His body will be removed from the scene shortly, and taken to the mortuary in Naas for a post-mortem examination."
