Body found by search team confirmed as boy, 2, ripped from his mum's arms in flood

A body found in the search for a missing two-year-old boy who was ripped from his mum's arms during devastating Tennessee floods has been identified.

The child, Kellen Cole Burrow, was one of a number of people who went missing in the wake of the deluge that has left at least 21 people dead.

Record downpours and flash flooding have caused devastation in the region over the weekend.

Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency had said rescuers were going house to house and digging through rubble for about 40 people unaccounted for in the area, directly west of Nashville.

Little Kellen was one of the missing after he was ripped from his mum's arms as she clutched onto a clothes line, holding her five children.

She held on for as long as she could outside their family's home as the flood waters rose before a powerful surge pulled the boy from her arms.

The Mail Online reports that DNA testing results have confirmed that a body found by a search team on Tuesday is that of the missing child.

His granddad Chris Hixson said that the body was being transported from the hospital to Taylor Funeral Home in Dickson.

Kellen's maternal grandfather, Allen Burrow, was said to be hoping for closure as he waited outside the hospital with his daughter Brittany McCord, the boy's mum, waiting for the DNA test results to come back.

He spoke of his daughter's heroic efforts to save her four children who were with her on Saturday when the water came pouring into her home.

He said: "She gathered them up in the corner bedroom, and got them all out the window as the current got higher and higher."

She climbed out and tried to hold onto her children, before the water swept Kellen away.

The boy's dad, who was at a doctor's appointment at the time, found a boat and went on to use shovels to paddle it in a bid to rescue Kellen.

Mr Burrow said: "He couldn't make it to him, but he saved four to five people in his effort to get to him."

Another missing child who has not been found is 15-year-old Lilly Bryant, who had reportedly just started her first year of high school.

A family friend, Chelsea Simons, said earlier: "Loved everybody, loved to make people laugh. There’s not another one like her.

"If we don’t find her tonight, we’ll be right back here in the morning as soon as daylight breaks to continue. We’re not gonna stop until we find their baby."

Officials who had been seeking federal aid were granted it late on Monday as President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in the state of Tennessee and ordered federal aid, the White House said in a statement.
