Body found at Melbourne beach: police

Victoria Police have confirmed that a body, believed to be a missing snorkeller, has been found. (AAP)

The body of a woman has been found after she went missing in the water near the pier at Altona beach in Melbourne's west.

Victoria Police have confirmed that a body, believed to be the 20-year-old, was found by the search and rescue squad at 10.30 on Monday.

The woman from Ashwood in the city's east was snorkelling with friends at about 11.15am on Saturday when she disappeared.

That sparked a large search involving local law enforcement, water police, specialist divers, and a police helicopter.

It continues Victoria's worst period on record for drowning deaths, with 43 fatalities since last July and eight this year.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
