Body found at Burnham-on-Sea beach

A body has been found on a Somerset beach.

The man was found on Sunday (June 9) in Burnham-on-Sea by The Esplanade.

Police have since confirmed the discovery is not linked to the disappearance of a sailor.

A boat belonging to missing sailor David Moore was found on Berrow Beach back on June 3, Somerset Live reports.

Despite the two incidents being very close to each other, police have said they are not related.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary confirmed on Wednesday (June 12): “The body found on the beach in Burnham-on-Sea is not connected and the death has been referred to the coroner as a non-suspicious sudden death.”

The missing yachtsman

Missing sailor David Moore departed Watchet Marina on his yacht on the afternoon of Saturday, June 1.

He is thought to have left the harbour and headed towards Bristol over the weekend.

His boat was discovered on Berrow Beach at around 6.30am on Monday, June 3, but David was not onboard.

Coastguard and police officers have been searching along the coastline, beach and sand dunes for any trace of David since.

The 43-year-old's friends have described him as an "incredibly experienced sailor" and say his disappearance is out of character.

How does a missing persons investigation work?

The body found on the beach

A male body was found near The Esplanade on Burnham-on-Sea beach, at 7am on Sunday (June 9).

The beach was cordoned off around the lighthouse while emergency services investigated.

We do not know the identity of the deceased, except that he is not the missing David Moore.

Police say the death is being treated as a “non-suspicious sudden death.”
