A girl's body was found in a river near the border in Mae Hong Son province as the search continued on Wednesday for seven people missing after a mudslide swept through a Myanmar refugee camp early on Sunday night.
The disaster prevention and mitigation office in the northern province on Wednesday reported a body floating on the Moei river.
Authorities were checking whether the dead person was one of seven people, five of them children, reported missing after the mudslide hit Ban Mae La Oon refugee camp in Sop Moei district on Sunday night, killing a 2-year-old child.
The office did not provide further details, but Col Wutthi Pathomruagkul, chief of the 36th Ranger Unit, told INN news agency the body was that of a girl and was found about 12 kilometres from the camp.
He could not confirm if it was the body of one of the missing people, but the location where the body was found suggested it could be.
The swiftly moving slide of mud and rocks killed a 2-year-old girl and injured 12 other refugees, all Karen, living in the makeshift quarters.
The 800-rai camp is two kilometres from the border with Myanmar and close to the Yuam river. The Yuam flows southward to meet the Moei in Mae Sariang district.
Rain hampered the search for the missing people on Wednesday. A helicopter scheduled to take provincial governor Sirirat Chumuppakarn to the camp remained grounded at the ranger unit's barracks in Muang district.
