The body of a woman swept away in a flood has been found while communities have been urged to evacuate as waters rise.

The woman was swept from a car which became stuck in floodwaters in a popular wine region amid heavy rain on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was a passenger in the car which became stranded in Black Creek in Rothbury, in the NSW Hunter region.

Her body was found on Wednesday morning, about 450 metres from where she was last seen.

A 27-year-old woman driving the car managed to get out.

NSW Police Inspector Justin Cornes thanked the multiple agencies involved in an "extremely difficult operation under difficult circumstances".

The flooding was triggered by heavy rain and unprecedented snow that wreaked havoc across NSW over the weekend.

The impact of the rain is continuing with further falls forecast in the coming days.

Residents of Narrabri in northern NSW were warned to evacuate on Wednesday afternoon as Narrabri Creek passed its 6.7m major flood level.

The creek was expected to peak at 7.1m on Wednesday night but the State Emergency Service warned further rises were possible as more water moved downstream.

Tens of thousands of people spent Saturday night without power as between 50 and 100mm of rain drenched parts of the mid-north coast and northern Hunter.

The SES had responded to more than 2500 incidents including 39 flood rescues by Wednesday.

One of those rescues was of a 40-year-old man stuck in a tree who was later swept into Black Creek.

He was taken to a hospital for a medical check.
