The body of a 21-year-old Victorian man has been recovered from waters on Queensland's Gold Coast.

Police said the man entered a canal near Sunshine Boulevard and Hooker Boulevard in Broadbeach with two friends around 5:30am on Tuesday.

He went underwater and did not reappear.

Acting Superintendent Greg Baade said the man's body was found by police divers around 9:00am, in the area where he went missing.

"It's understood that they were with a group of approximately 10 other friends staying at a residence near where the incident occurred," he said.

"Sadly this is a group of people on holidays from Victoria on the Gold Coast and for this to happen is just an absolute tragedy."

He said the group of friends had been on the coast since around New Year's eve.

"We always recommend that you only swim in patrolled areas or designated swimming enclosures or swimming pools," he said.

"We try and promote safety on the waterways … and these instances will happen and this is just an absolute tragedy."
