Body found after 'loud explosion' heard on remote Snowdonia road

An investigation has been launched afer a body was found following a 'loud explosion' on a remote mountain road in Snowdonia.

The discovery was made after police responded to reports of a car blaze shortly before 2pm on Monday, November 1, on the A498 near Nant Gwynant, Snowdonia.

Sadly, a body was discovered in the driver's seat of the vehicle, and has not yet been identified, reports Wales Online.

A seven-mile stretch of the A498 was closed in both directions for more than seven hours between Beddgelert and Pen-y-Pass after the vehicle was discovered.

In a statement, a spokesperson for North Wales Police said: "At 1.57pm on Monday, November 1, police were called to a report of a loud explosion and vehicle on fire on the A498 near Nant Gwynant.

"Sadly, a body, yet to be identified, was discovered in the driver’s seat.

"Police are working closely with the coroner and the Home Office pathologist in order to confirm identification of the victim and circumstances surrounding the incident.

"We are appealing to any witnesses who may have seen the explosion, or the vehicle at the location prior to the incident to contact us via our live webchat online or on 101 quoting reference Z160711."
