Neighbours heard 'big bang' as fatal house fire engulfed southern Tasmanian home

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fatal blaze.

A body has been found in the ruins of a home destroyed by fire overnight in Geeveston, south of Hobart.

Emergency crews were called to the blaze on Fourfoot Road just after midnight and found the house fully alight.

Neighbours told the ABC they heard a big bang and woke to find the house fully engulfed in flames.

Neighbour Nadine Ashlin said when the residents woke up the fire was too intense to check if the man who lived in the home had escaped.

"[Our top neighbour] went and got the neighbours out before their house went," she said.

The home could not be saved and a body was found inside this morning.

Police and the Tasmania Fire Service watched over the scene overnight.

Fire investigators were working on Wednesday to determine the cause of the blaze.
