Body found after house collapses in devastating early morning fire

A body has been found after a fire partially destroyed a house in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire.

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire in a detached house shortly after 3am on Saturday.

Eight nearby houses were evacuated at the time as a precaution.

Police have now said a body has been discovered following the blaze, which is not currently being treated as suspicious.

Formal identification of the person who died has yet to take place.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.

Detective Sergeant Mark Nelson, from Coatbridge CID, said: "A joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire is still ongoing.

"At this stage there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

"Emergency services are also continuing efforts to ensure the safety of the damaged house and the surrounding properties."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service mobilised six appliances and a number of specialist resources to extinguish the fire.

A spokesman said the building suffered a partial collapse.
