Body found after car explosion on remote road in Wales

A body was found after an explosion was reported on a remote mountain road, police confirmed today.

The discovery was made after police responded to reports of a car on fire, shortly before 2pm on Monday, November 1, on the A498 near Nant Gwynant, Snowdonia.

The body, which has not yet been identified, was discovered in the driver's seat of the vehicle.

A seven-mile stretch of the A498 was shut in both directions between Beddgelert and Pen-y-Pass for more than seven hours after the vehicle was found.

A North Wales Police spokesperson said: "At 1.57pm on Monday, November 1, police were called to a report of a loud explosion and vehicle on fire on the A498 near Nant Gwynant.

"Sadly, a body, yet to be identified, was discovered in the driver’s seat.

"Police are working closely with the coroner and the Home Office pathologist in order to confirm identification of the victim and circumstances surrounding the incident.

"We are appealing to any witnesses who may have seen the explosion, or the vehicle at the location prior to the incident to contact us via our live webchat online or on 101 quoting reference Z160711."
