The bodies of three men have been found after an extensive search for a group that failed to return home from a trip off the coast of Wollongong overnight.

The trio left the Bellambi boat ramp, north of Wollongong, at 2:00pm on Saturday for a fishing trip and was due to return in the early hours of the morning.

Family members raised the alarm with police at 6:00am when the men failed to return, prompting an extensive search.

Their overturned boat was found floating off the coast of Port Kembla at about midday on Sunday.

One man's body was discovered near Corrimal Beach late in the morning with two others located in the early afternoon.

They are yet to be formally identified.

A police spokesman said an extensive search was launched for the missing men after their utility and boat trailer were found in the boat ramp carpark.

"Family members alerted police at 6:00am today when the boat did not return as scheduled," he said.

"The men's utility and boat trailer have been found in the car park."

An emergency helicopter and Surf Life Saving personnel were involved in the search.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
