Bodo/Glimt v Tottenham LIVE: Spurs overcome Arctic challenge to book place in Europa League final

Tottenham put on a clinic in game management to put their Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt to bed and book their place in a European final.

Bringing a 3-1 lead to the Arctic Circle, Spurs didn't allow the Norwegian underdogs to gain any early momentum, with their only real first-half opening coming from a dead-ball scenario. Patrick Berg tried to catch Guglielmo Vicario out with a swerving free-kick, but the Italian stopper was equal to it to palm over.

Ange Postecoglou's side then gave themselves clear daylight in the tie after the restart, with Dominic Solanke prodding home before Pedro Porro caught out Nikita Haikin from wide to bend into the top corner.

Spurs will now face Man United in an all-English Europa League final, with the two Premier League rivals set to lock horns over continental silverware in Bilbao on May 21.

Report: Tottenham book Europa League final against Man Utd after impressive victory at Bodo/Glimt

Thursday 8 May 2025 23:30 , Will Castle

Tottenham remain on course to end their 17-year trophy drought and to win silverware in Ange Postecoglou’s second season after a 2-0 win at Bodo/Glimt sent them through to the Europa League final.

Spurs held a two-goal lead after last week’s first leg in north London, but had been warned to expect a stern examination on Bodo’s notoriously difficult artificial surface in the Arctic Circle.

A firework display welcomed both teams onto the Aspmyra Stadion pitch, but Postecoglou watched his team produce a masterful defensive display in the first half before they struck twice in the second period.

Dominic Solanke made the breakthrough after 63 minutes with his 15th goal of the season, before a cross-cum-shot from Pedro Porro six minutes later all but assured Tottenham of a place in the final in Bilbao.

“It's been a long season and we're down to the business end,” Solanke said. “One more game to go and hopefully we can do it.

“We knew it was going to be very difficult, they started well. We knew we had to be disciplined."

"The fans are phenomenal, the last game at home was the same. Hopefully the fans can make it to Bilbao and we'll have another special day."

85 mins: Bodo/Glimt are playing for the badge now.

They’re still attacking and have just won a corner, but it comes to nothing.

81 mins: Bodo/Glimt try and work it through the middle as they move into the box but once again, Spurs are able to cut it out before the Norwegians can properly threaten.

This has been a really assured performance from a team who have been far from top performers this season.

78 mins: It’s a cold, wet night in Norway, but the Tottenham fans are in full voice with the knowledge that they are all but in the Europa League final.

Bodo/Glimt have made a couple more changes - Nielsen and Auklend on for Saltnes and Moe - but I doubt that will change much in terms of the outcome.

Thursday 8 May 2025 21:34 , Will Castle

58 mins: CHANCE! Big chance for Bodo/Glimt but big intervention from Destiny Udogie!

Bjorkan gets it down the left and delivers one towards the back post, where Hogh is waiting for a tap in.

Udogie comes across with a brilliant challenge to make sure the striker doesn’t get there first.

The flag goes up afterwards so it may not have counted anyway, but Udogie wasn’t to know that.

Thursday 8 May 2025 21:16 , Will Castle

56 mins: Moe gives it away sloppily as Richarlison tries to drive into the box.

The Brazilian can’t get a shot away but Van de Ven storms up to win the ball back in the attacking third, before blazing a wild cross into the stands.

Thursday 8 May 2025 20:22 , Will Castle

A lot has been made of the “Arctic Circle” challenge that awaits Tottenham. But just how cold is out in Norway?

Well, it’s only 7°C - a good 10°C or so less than London, but nothing that should inflict frostbite.

Nevertheless, in such an open stadium, they will be more exposed to the elements than usual. And it’s absolutely tipping it down.

Uefa confirm Europa League final stance if Manchester United play Tottenham

Thursday 8 May 2025 19:30 , Will Castle

The Europa League final in Bilbao will not be moved if Manchester United face Tottenham Hotspur on May 21.

Both teams are in a strong position to contend for the trophy after winning the first legs of their semi-finals on Thursday night, with United beating Athletic Bilbao 3-0 away from home and Tottenham earning a 3-1 advantage over Bodo/Glimt ahead of next week’s return leg in Norway.

An all-English final would give two of the Premier League’s underperforming teams a chance to save their seasons and gain direct access to next year’s Champions League. United are in 14th place in the Premier League and Tottenham, who have not won a trophy since 2008, are 16th.

Tottenham bracing for challenge of Bodo/Glimt’s artificial pitch

Thursday 8 May 2025 19:10 , Will Castle

On top of the cold conditions in the Arctic Circle, Spurs will face the challenge of playing on an unfamiliar surface as they take to the Aspmyra Stadion’s 3G pitch.

The artificial nature of the ground may be a reason behind Bodo/Glimt’s formidable home record in Europe, something Spurs will undoubtedly be wary of.

However, Dejan Kulusevski - who played on such surfaces during his time in Sweden - believes Spurs can deal with the different pitch.

“It is different football (on an artificial pitch), it is a different pitch, but in life, you have to do what you have to do to find a way to win and we have got to do that,” he said.

Bilbao is likely to be full of English football fans on Wednesday 21 May. Northern Spain’s largest city is hosting the Europa League final.

Many Spurs and Man United fans have already booked flights to Bilbao on the assumption their team will be playing in the final in the San Mames Stadium at 8pm on 21 May.

Fares have surged, even though easyJet has laid on extra flights from London Gatwick and Manchester.

It is likely that a limited number of additional flights will be laid on by budget airlines. But there are many other ways to reach Bilbao.

Aston Villa ‘not happy’ as Tottenham fixture moved

Thursday 8 May 2025 17:30 , Will Castle

Aston Villa bosses insist they are "not happy" about their Premier League match against Tottenham being brought forward two days to assist the Londoners' preparations for a potential Europa League final appearance.

Villa's director of football operations Damian Vidagany said his club had reluctantly accepted the change, and hoped the "clear prejudice" against Villa in this decision would be remembered should they need assistance with fixture scheduling due to European football next season.

"Fixture changed and honestly, not happy," he wrote on X.

"But it could be even worst (sic). We really pushed - everyone in the club at different levels - with solid and fair grounds to protect our fans ( our main task and duty) and keep the Spurs match on Sunday. Nothing against Spurs."

"Well, I mean that's a debate that's been raging for years, like at least the last eight days," Postecoglou smiled. "I've never heard that before. I've said it before, mate, Spurs does crazy things to people. It does, it does.

"You put that club into any sentence or any issue and invariably they all come out and try and diminish as much as they can.

"Why wasn't there an issue before and it's an issue now? What's the difference? I don't understand what the difference is.

"Last year, fifth didn't get you into the Champions League, this year it does. What does that mean?

"There are competition rules and the rules say that the winner goes into (Champions League) and it's not the first year.

"And there isn't an asterisk against it that you have to do something else as well, but it's Spurs, mate, they love it. They love it.”

James Maddison out for the season with potential Europa League final looming

Thursday 8 May 2025 16:45 , Will Castle

Now this is a big blow.

James Maddison will be out for the rest of Tottenham’s season with a knee injury, Ange Postecoglou has confirmed.

Maddison was forced off in last week’s 3-1 Europa League semi-final first-leg win against Bodo/Glimt, a result that put Spurs on the brink of a European final later this month.

However, should Postecoglou’s side pass this week’s test in the Arctic and book their place in Bilbao, Maddison will play no part in the final showcase after scans revealed he is facing an extended period on the sidelines.
