Police continue to investigate the cause of a house fire near Reigate in which a man, a woman and a child died.
The three bodies were discovered in a double bed among the ruins of the farm cottage on Tuesday morning, Surrey police said.
The victims were named in reports as Tiago and Adriana Nunes and their son, also called Tiago. A police spokesman said next of kin had been informed.
A police cordon remained in place around Little Santon farm on Wednesday, and forensics officers were at the scene.
Insp Richard Hamlin, of Surrey police, said Surrey fire and rescue service were jointly investigating. “Fire officers have been working hard to ensure the scene and structure of the building is safe to enter, and we will continue working with them today to maintain the scene,” he said.
“We are still investigating, with the fire service, to determine a cause of the fire as the cause remains unexplained at this time.” He urged anyone with information to contact the police.
It is believed the boy was a pupil at North Downs primary school, where parents received a letter informing them of a “tragic incident”. Families were also given a leaflet with advice on how to help their children deal with the tragedy.
Local people spoke of their shock at the deaths. One resident, Christine Beard, said police had spoken to her to ask whether she was aware of the incident. “The houses are few and far between here so we weren’t aware of anything,” Beard said. “The police have been round but I don’t think they know how the fire started or what time it started.
“It’s terrible news. We had seen comings and goings from there with horses, and had taken in the odd parcel for them, but that’s it.”
