Two bodies found days after parking garage collapse in Philadelphia

The bodies of two construction workers have been recovered five days after a parking garage collapse in Philadelphia.

The tragic discovery Monday morning followed days of intensive search and recovery efforts at the site.

Crews were searching for two missing workers after a section of the roof at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s garage gave way Wednesday, leading to a collapse across all seven levels of the structure. The parking garage was under construction at the time of the collapse.

Mayor Cherelle Parker initially said that three workers were rescued and hospitalized. One died from their injuries, while the other two were treated and released.

By Thursday, search dogs had found no further signs of life in the rubble at the collapse site.

Crews spent the weekend carefully dismantling the unstable building to facilitate the search. Recovery operations continued Sunday night, culminating in the discovery and retrieval of the two workers early Monday.

Mayor Parker said: "They have recovered both individuals with the utmost dignity and compassion and respect for their families and loved ones."

The Department of Public Health and the Medical Examiner’s office are now tasked with identifying the deceased.

The mayor said that she would order the city solicitor and law department to investigate the collapse.
