Dec. 19--The bodies of two infants, possibly twins, have been found in an abandoned storage unit in Northern California, authorities said.
It is unclear how long the bodies had been inside the storage unit in Colfax, but Placer County sheriff's deputies located and interviewed the infants' mother, said Dena Erwin, spokeswoman of the Placer County Sheriff's Office.
They said the mother did not provide further details about the grim discovery, she said.
Detectives said they are awaiting forensic and toxicology tests before they determine their next move.
The discovery was made Nov. 25 after a woman purchased the contents of the storage unit during an auction.
When she entered the unit, the woman was overwhelmed by a strong, foul odor, and notified authorities.
A sheriff's deputies eventually traced the odor to a storage container, which Erwin said contained the body of a fetus or small infant. The body was inside a plastic bag.
The second body was discovered only after coroner's investigators began processing the container.
Autopsies were performed on the infants. Authorities are still trying to determine if the infants were twins, Erwin said.
