Boca Juniors icon reveals conversation with Man United's Edinson Cavani over 'dream' transfer

A Boca Juniors icon has confirmed plans to bring Edinson Cavani to the club in the summer.

Cavani's future has been the focus of plenty of speculation in recent weeks, with his contract at Manchester United set to expire at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen whether Cavani will extend his stay at Old Trafford, with the player's father claiming he wants to return to South America after failing to settle in England.

United, meanwhile, are understood to be frustrated over Cavani's recent fitness problems and have held off on offering a new contract.

Earlier this weeks, reports from Uruguay suggested Cavani could move to Nacional, but Argentine side Boca Juniors have also been linked, with former United defender Marcos Rojo talking up the possibility of the forward joining him at La Bombonera.

Sergio Daniel Martinez, nicknamed Manteca, who scored 79 goals in 137 appearances for Boca in the 1990s, has now confirmed plans for his compatriot to come to the club, revealing that he originally contacted Cavani's brother over a potential move last summer.

"All Bosteros want Edi to come," he said to Cadena Xeneize.

"We'll see if it can happen in June. It's the dream we have.

"I spoke with his brother at the time, in the other transfer market, to tell him about Boca, but it couldn't happen.

"Now we are all waiting to see if it can be done."

He added: "After Cavani said that he wanted to climb the fence, it’s impossible to get rid of that dream.

"Hopefully they don’t remove the fences so Cavani can climb up and shout the goals."

Asked if Juan Roman Riquelme, Boca's vice-president, had asked him for help over securing Cavani, Manteca said he was always willing to lend a hand if necessary.

He said: "A little yes and a little no. Roman reaches out to all the players, if he picks up the phone he can speak directly.

"At that time, Edi was playing at PSG with Leandro Paredes. There’s always an acquaintance who comes to the player, and all that brings the parties closer together."
