The Miami faithful have heard a lot about the versatility of Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick — how he’s going to be moved all over the secondary and even play on the second level from time to time. But the Dolphins may have another trick up their sleeve — a move dedicated to getting their best secondary defenders on the field at the same time.
Keep an eye on Bobby McCain. The Dolphins have experimented with McCain playing all over the field — this after he was given a big contract as a nickel defender and then was forced to play outside cornerback in 2018 due to injuries to the defense.
Coach Brian Flores offered encouraging words when talking about McCain’s versatility.
“I think (Bobby) is smart enough definitely to move around. He can play corner, he can play safety, he can play nickel, he can play a variety of positions,” said Flores. “He’s a smart player and a guy who’s made a lot of plays in this league. We’re looking forward to working with him.”
Getting McCain on the field in looks that extend beyond sub-packages is smart for the Dolphins — they can treat their secondary like an offensive line in this approach. How so?
Find the best four or five guys and make sure you find a combination that works and keep them on the field. Let your best players play — but don’t do anything crazy that plays them away from their strengths. McCain on the field more makes sense, especially if the concession is taking TJ McDonald off and letting McCain play safety opposite Minkah Fitzpatrick.
