Bobby Marks predicts Jaden McDaniels-type deal for Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson’s future with the Golden State Warriors continues to be a talking point. His contract expires at the end of the season. He will become an unrestricted free agent unless he agrees to re-sign with Golden State. The biggest question surrounding the entire situation is how much money Golden State will be willing to commit to their aging sharpshooter.

In a recent appearance on the “Willard and Dibs” show, ESPN’s Bobby Marks shared his thoughts on the potential contract value of a Thompson extension. He noted how he could envision a Jaden McDaniels level contract, with a salary in the region of $30 million per year.

“If it’s not Golden State, then who is it?” Marks said. “It’s hard for me to see a team going out and committing three years, $75 million for Klay Thompson. … Probably what you’re looking at in Minnesota with Jaden McDaniels. He got five years for $131 (million). You’re probably looking at $30 million per year.”

Thompson is expected to come off the bench for Golden State for the foreseeable future. Steve Kerr made the rotation switch before the All-Star break, and Thompson responded by dropping 35 points in a sixth man role. As such, it makes sense both the Warriors and Thompson would explore how coming off the bench could benefit his ability to affect games at an elite level.

Throughout the season, Thompson has made no secret of his desire to remain with Golden State. He wants to retire as a one-team player. As such, it would be logical to expect both he and Warriors eventually find a middle ground with their negotiations.
