Bobby Madden's Celtic blunder earns SFA talking to as referee chief admits Hearts decision was wrong

Bobby Madden was spoken to after the controversial Celtic vs Hearts match — but not about Kyogo's potentially offside goal.

The Parkhead clash was notable for a number of controversial incidents but the Japanese forward's strike in the 1-0 win was only the tip of the iceberg.

SFA referees chief admitted the goal which so angered Hearts boss Robbie Neilson was "probably" offside but that the decision was "understandable".

He said: "On Kyogo, is he in front of the defender? Yes, he probably is. You've then got to look at the angle of the ball and the speed of it in real time, and it is very very tight.

"So it's an understandable decision."

While the marginal but seemingly incorrect call was a difficult one to make there was another incident in the second half that had Jambos fuming on Thursday night.

Celtic winger Jota pulled up under no contact for a hamstring injury and was replaced by Mikey Johnston with Madden blowing to allow for treatment and restarting with a drop ball.

But he allowed the home team to win back possession despite the fact Hearts had regained the ball and were on the counter by the time the official blew the whistle to stop play.

A furious Neilson said he'd "go to jail" if he said what he really made of that incident and SFA refs chief Allan has admitted Madden's course of action was wrong.

He took to the airwaves on Saturday afternoon to explain the process but revealed he spoke to Madden in the aftermath to bring up the error.

Allan told BBC Sportsound: "So it's not just head knocks, it's serious injury to a player.

"Now, you can argue all day long that it wasn't serious injury to the player to stop the game.

"The fact the player got taken off and replaced, Bobby's decision at the time was that he was very close to it.

"I've spoken to Bobby on this. He said it was clear the player was in severe pain. It wasn't just one where a player falls and screams.

"He said it was clear to him an injury had occurred. He stopped the game because of that — that's Bobby's opinion in terms of how he does that, it's in the laws of the game that a referee can stop the game if, in his opinion, a player is seriously injured.

"Is a hamstring a serious injury? Debatable.

"Where I think there's definitely the error from our point of view, and I've chatted to Bobby on this, was the restart.

"By the time Bobby got the whistle to his mouth, which was only less half a second or so, Hearts then had possession and what should have been done is Hearts should have had the drop ball and been allowed to retain possession.

"At the time his view was the Celtic player had just stopped playing with it, had gone down and he blew, and Celtic still had it. But having spoken to Bobby it was clear Hearts had it. It should have been a drop ball for Hearts."
