Bobby Madden Rangers penalty calls against Motherwell defended by ex-referee Hugh Dallas

Referee Bobby Madden's decision to award two penalties to Rangers yesterday at Fir Park have been defended by former whistler Hugh Dallas.

The Steelmen were controversially penalised twice for handball in the box as the whistler pointed to the spot in the 5-1 rout in Lanarkshire.

With the new rules coming under scrutiny last weekend, the ex-Grade One referee has backed the calls of Madden adding that the ball struck the Steelmen in an "unnatural" position.

On BBC Sportsound UEFA Deputy Chief Refereeing Officer Dallas said: "I can understand from a player and coaches point of view that they don't like it; no one likes change, whether change is for the better, and normally it should be.

"On the first penalty kick, if it doesn't touch the Motherwell players arm which is out at the 20 to 3 position, it is going to a Rangers attacker right behind him who is standing practically on the penalty spot.

"The arm was out, it was unnatural."

When challenged about the unnatural position by pundit and ex-Hearts manager Craig Levein he again told the BBC : "At the end of the day the arm was higher than what it was when it struck the players hand.

"I think Michael Stewart [BBC pundit] said last night that he tried to get his hand out of the way, and by doing that he stopped the ball from going beyond him.

"According to the law the body was made unnaturally bigger and it stopped the ball going to an opposition player.

"The decisions at Fir Park are difficult but according to the laws of the game the referee called both decisions correctly."
