Bobby Madden penalty award against Motherwell 'ludicrous', claims Michael Stewart

Sportscene pundit Michael Stewart has branded Bobby Madden's decision to award St Mirren a controversial penalty against Motherwell 'ludicrous'.

Motherwell defender Bevis Mugabi was penalised for clipping the foot of the Buddies midfielder Lee Erwin in the box, although the Fir Park star protested to whistler Madden that he won the ball.

Reviewing the footage on Sportscene last night, former Hibs star Stewart was left astonished by the decision to award a spot-kick, which was converted by Jamie McGrath and led to Saints earning a point in a 1-1 draw.

Fellow pundit, former Rangers defender Ricky Foster, also claimed the Steelmen were hard done by before Stewart let rip.

Foster said: "I don't think it's a penalty. I don't think you can conclusively tell that the defender's come through the back of Lee [Erwin] there.

And Stewart interjected: "You can't conclusively tell because it didn't happen.

"That's not a penalty.

"He [Erwin] may well have felt contact, but the two two feet are side by side.

"If he brushes past the side of him, he might have made contact but that's not a penalty kick.

"If you think that's a penalty, then it's ludicrous."

Motherwell return to action on Sunday when they host runaway league leaders Rangers.
