Bobby Madden chosen as Rangers vs Celtic referee as he's handed derby reins for first time since Jordan Jones incident

Bobby Madden has been appointed to take charge of Rangers vs Celtic on January 2.

The experienced SFA whistler was last in charge of the fixture in September last year when he sent off Jordan Jones for a wild challenge in the closing minutes of the game.

Neil Lennon's Hoops were 2-0 victors on that day at Ibrox and they'll need a similar result to spark some life into their title race.

They currently trail the Premiership leaders by 16 points although they do hold three games in hand over their rivals.

Madden was also the man in the middle for the March 2019 showdown at Parkhead which saw Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos sent off for an elbow on Scott Brown before Ryan Kent's aggressive push towards the skipper could have also merited a red card.

Andy Halliday was also shown a red after full time on that occasion.

But with no fans in the ground for the traditional New Year fixture tempers may be slightly calmer than Madden's last two derbies.
