Bobby Madden appointed Rangers vs Celtic referee as he takes charge of second derby in three months

Bobby Madden has been appointed as the referee for the Scottish Cup clash between Rangers and Celtic.

The experienced SFA whistler will be assisted by David McGeachie and Graeme Stewart, with Kevin Clancy as the fourth official.

It will be the second time in a matter of months that Madden will have taken charge of an Old Firm.

He was the man in the middle for Rangers' 1-0 victory over their great rivals on January 2, in which he sent off defender Nir Bitton in a game-changing incident.

With Celtic on top for much of the contest the Israeli was given his marching orders for a last-man challenge on Alfredo Morelos - and eight minutes later a Callum McGregor own goal decided the contest.

Madden was also involved in a powderkeg March 2019 meeting between the Glasgow giants which saw Morelos sent off for elbowing Scott Brown.

Andy Halliday, too, was dismissed after full time, and Ryan Kent could have seen red for an altercation with the Parkhead captain.

Also this season, Madden was withdrawn late on for the Hoops' visit to Ross County as he was identified as a close contact of linesman Stewart when he caught Covid-19 shortly after returning from Greece.

A Scottish contingent took charge of the derby in Athens between Panathanaikos and Olympiacos and Stewart failed to self-isolate as he officiated a match between Hibs and Hamilton Accies, which prompted an SFA apology to both clubs.
