Bobby Burns leaves Hearts for Newcastle Jets on loan despite lengthy injury list at Tynecastle

Hearts youngster Bobby Burns has joined Newcastle Jets on loan despite the Tynecastle club's lengthy injury list.

The versatile Northern Irishman has played just one first team game this season in a Betfred Cup win over Cowdenbeath.

And Craig Levein has decided to send him down under for some regular action. That's despite left backs Aidy White and Ben Garrucio both being injured.

It means teenager Aaron Hicky is the only fit left sided defender available to him although Michael Smith - also recovering from a knock - and Ollie Bozanic can both fill in.

Burns joined Hearts from Glenavon and was immediately sent on loan to Livingston before making 10 appearances for the Tynecastle club in the second half of last season.

He admits he is looking forward to experiencing football outside of the UK.

He said: “I’ve played all of my football in the United Kingdom so far, and to come out to Australia is a fantastic opportunity.

“To have the chance to push for consistent senior football at my age is an exciting one, but I know I’ll have to work hard to earn my spot.

“I have ambitions to kick on from U21 duties and play in the senior Northern Ireland team, and I believe playing for Newcastle will help me do that.”
