Bobby Burns joins Australian side Newcastle Jets on season-long loan

Northern Ireland Under 21 defender Bobby Burns has joined Australian side Newcastle Jets.

The former Glenavon youngster has agreed a season-long loan deal with the A-League outfit.

The 19-year-old joins from Scottish Premiership club Hearts and described his move Down Under as ‘a life-changing opportunity’.

Speaking on Twitter, Burns said: “Absolutely delighted to sign for the Newcastle Jets in Australia on loan this season. A life-changing opportunity I couldn’t turn down. Best of luck for the rest of the season Heart of Midlothian.”

The left-back - who can also play in midfield - played 10 times for Hearts last season and had a loan spell with Livingston.

He has won five caps for the Northern Ireland U21 side and was recently on the bench for the senior side's friendly against Luxembourg.

“I’ve played all of my football in the United Kingdom so far, and to come out to Australia is a fantastic opportunity,” Burns told the Jets' website.

“To have the chance to push for consistent senior football at my age is an exciting one, but I know I’ll have to work hard to earn my spot.

“I have ambitions to kick on from U/21 duties and play in the senior Northern Ireland team, and I believe playing for Newcastle will help me do that.”

Burns will travel with the Jets to Dubbo this weekend as a part of the #JetsTOUR, and will be in line for the pre-season friendly clash with Sydney FC on Saturday.
