Bob Shields: Time to show leadership at the top of South Ayrshire Council

The gloom and doom merchants are working overtime.

Some are predicting a 25% dip in the economy which can easily be interpreted as a 25% cut in employment. One university economics professor says it could five or even 10 years before we’re back to the productivity and employment levels of 2019.

But even in a best case scenario – South Ayrshire is going to be overwhelmed with requests for local authority housing as private tenants and many mortgaged home owners suddenly find they can no longer pay the bills.

But meanwhile, SAC is firing ahead with plans to demolish the Riverside Place flats – almost 200 perfectly serviceable homes. Surely some sort of halfway house hiatus can be arranged. Why not give these flats a five-year extension of life and review their circumstances in 2025?

SAC is failing its own housing targets – and the Governments.

Razing Riverside Place made little sense in the first place and it makes absolutely no sense now.

Exceptional circumstances demand exceptional decision making. If SAC is up to the task – now is the time to prove it.
