Last week, Magic Johnson decided to resign from his position of President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. It was a move that shocked many, including Lakers controlling owner and President, Jeanie Buss, who found out at the same time the rest of us did.
With the position opened, many wondered who the Lakers would reach out to fill the vacancy, and a lot of those wanderings pointed toward the Bay Area. Warriors President of Basketball Operations, Bob Myers, is a SoCal kid who went to UCLA, and many mused that if there was any job that could pull him away from the Warriors, this was the one.
NBC Sports Monte Poole put the idea out in the world to Myers to get a feel for where his head was, and it seemed like it was nowhere but with the Warriors.
Me: What are you doing here today?
Bob: What do you mean?
Me: Shouldn’t you be having lunch with (Lakers controlling owner) Jeanie Buss?
Bob: Oh, right. Almost forgot. (Looks at his watch) I’m supposed to meet her at 2.
Myers then laughed a laugh that suggests he’s not eager to go anywhere anytime soon, even if there are days and nights when he probably wouldn’t mind.
If nothing else, this should at least have Warriors fans at ease at the moment that Myers isn’t even entertaining the idea of leaving the Warriors for Los Angeles. Myers is as responsible for the Warriors success over the last five years as Steph Curry or Steve Kerr, and the Warriors would be smart to do everything they can to ensure that he remains with the team beyond this season.
