Bob Latchford at 70 - a chat with one of Everton's great centre-forwards

An Everton hero of the 1970s features tonight on BBC Radio Merseyside.

Ahead of the visit of Manchester City to Goodison Park, “Big Bob Latchford” will be aired at 6pm, to mark the recent 70th birthday of one of the club’s greatest centre-forwards.

In the archive interview with Mike Hughes “The Latch” opens up on his time at Goodison and explains how the notion of the 1970s being a dark period for the club needs challenging.

“A lot of Evertonians look back on the 1970s as a rather dark era," said Latchford. "I don’t think it was as bleak as people think it was. I think that it’s coloured by the history of what happened before in the 1960s and then what came afterwards. Also the fact that Liverpool were so dominant.

"If you isolate these facts and what we achieved- a certain referee stopped us getting to Wembley and in the 1974/75 season if we’d have beaten Carlisle, who got relegated that season, we would have won the league.

"Things could have been quite different."

"Big Bob Latchford" will air from 6pm tonight on BBC Radio Merseyside.
