Bob Katter hands party leadership to his son, says it's time for him to 'go after our enemies'

Bob Katter has stepped down as national leader of the Katter's Australian Party, his son Robbie Katter, has taken over the role.

The Federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter, has stepped down from the national leadership of the Katter's Australian Party (KAP).

The State Member for Traeger, Robbie Katter, who was already the party's leader in Queensland, has taken over the role of leader.

Bob Katter had led the party since its creation in 2011, he said he has no intention of leaving politics and confirmed he will recontest his seat of Kennedy at the next Federal election.

"I came to the view that it had to be done not because I am retiring out of the arena, anything but," Mr Katter said.

"I have got a lot more time to go after our enemies, I am the more deadly one here," he said.

'Not hard to be more cautious than Dad'

Robbie Katter said while his new role requires a national focus, the upcoming Queensland State Election is the KAP's immediate priority.

"It is a stronghold for us and I think we could do a lot better in this next State election," Mr Katter said.

"We do have a vision beyond north Queensland and it's a movement it's not about so much pushing a person or a party."

In his role as the KAP leader and the Federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter has been considered a maverick.

Robbie Katter said he will work closely with his father, but a different approach can be expected of him.

"To be more cautious and balanced than Dad, that's not hard," Mr Katter said.

"If you're comparing me to my father … I tend to sit back a bit more and observe."
