Bob Dylan musical Girl from the North Country set to return to the West End

Critically-acclaimed hit musical Girl from the North Country is heading back to the West End.

Conor McPherson’s play, which features the music of Bob Dylan, will run at the Gielgud Theatre from December for a limited season.

Girl from the North Country had its premiere at the Old Vic in 2017 before transferring to the West End. It is set to open in Toronto in September and on Broadway in March 2020.

The Standard’s Fiona Mountford said “this is Dylan like we’ve never heard him before” calling it “a very special piece of theatre”.

Dylan’s songs intertwine around a story set in his own hometown of Duluth, Minnesota. It takes place during the Great Depression in a boarding house, where people from all walks of life come together under the same dire conditions.

The new cast includes Daniel Bailey, Colin Bates, Katie Brayben, Anna Jane Casey, Nicholle Cherrie, David Ganly, Simon Gordon, Steffan Harri, David Haydn, Rachel John, Sidney Kean, Finbar Lynch, Donald Sage Mackay, Gloria Obianyo, Ferdy Roberts, Wendy Somerville, Gemma Sutton, Shaq Taylor and Alan Vicary.

McPherson directs the production, with arrangement by Simon Hale, design by Rae Smith, lighting by Mark Henderson, sound by Simon Baker and movement by Lucy Hind.

The show was nominated for five Olivier Awards, with Shirley Hendersen and Sheila Atim winning for best actress and best supporting actress.

Girl from the North Country will run at the Gielgud Theatre from December 10 until February 1, 2020.
