Bob Arum insists Deontay Wilder won’t step aside to allow Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury to take place

Tyson Fury’s promoter has ruled out the prospect of Deontay Wilder stepping aside to allow a heavyweight unification fight with Anthony Joshua to take place in Saudi Arabia on August 14.

A deal had been done for a Fury-Joshua blockbuster fight later this summer only for a judge this week to rule in an arbitration hearing that Fury must meet Wilder for a third time first by September 15.

There had been hope that Wilder would be paid up to £14million to forego the trilogy bout.

But Fury’s US promoter Bob Arum told Boxing Social: “There’s no chance he [Wilder] will step aside. Whatever it is, the judge said he had a right to the rematch and we are going ahead with it.

“It is what it is. [Fury] will take out his frustration and anger on Wilder, and he tells me he will knock Wilder out quicker than he did last time.”

Wilder was knocked out in the seventh round of their heavyweight encounter in February last year, the last time Fury fought.

With Fury set to face Wilder, Joshua has turned his attention to facing WBO mandatory challenger Oleksandr Usyk after which Arum is confident Fury-Joshua talks will resume.

“I don’t think it will be difficult after they both, if they both win, to renew talks,” he said. “We have been through it, we know all the ins and outs, and it will come together quite quickly. At least that is my hope.”
