Boats take to water to celebrate lockdown easing

After twelve weeks, people across England can finally meet outside in groups of six and Londoner’s celebrated by making a splash as they hit the waterways in groups of six, courtesy of GoBoat, to see in the latest government lockdown easing.

On the day that England is no longer ordered to “stay home”, eco-friendly boat company GoBoat welcomed customers back and celebrated the occasion by creating the word six with a fleet of their self-drive electrical boats on Regent’s Canal.

London sprang back to life, with groups of friends, families and even dogs reuniting and taking to the capital’s waterways - one of few activities that can be enjoyed under the latest lockdown rules. Celebrating the occasion with picnics and prosecco, people were seen enjoying the activity in both London’s Paddington and Kingston where GoBoat operates.

GoBoat co-owner, Julian Wootton said: “Just to say we’re open for bookings again is incredible and what a way to reopen. We think our giant ‘six’ is a fitting way to celebrate and it was so much fun for the team to slowly get back to normality. It felt like there was a real sense of relief.

“We’ve already seen a huge influx of bookings and cannot wait to see everyone taking to the water this summer. We’re by no means out of the woods with Coronavirus and so we’re taking every precaution to ensure our customers stay safe.”

GoBoat has made some changes to ensure things are kept safe and within government guidelines:

  • Six people may book a GoBoat from GoBoat London (Paddington) and GoBoat Kingston

  • Every GoBoat is sanitized in-between each trip

  • Contactless payment only, booking ahead online is advised

  • New safe-distanced queuing system to keep guests apart

  • Contact-free check-in at the kiosk

Wootton continued: “It was great to see friends and families in such good spirits today now that they can finally see each other. Bookings for GoBoat are open now and you can once again charter an electric picnic boat without the need for a licence. Both our sites – Paddington and Kingston, will be open seven days a week from today.”

Each GoBoat can take up to eight guests but given the latest regulations, until 17th May GoBoat London will be taking bookings for up to six people per boat and guests must maintain social distancing guidelines throughout the experience. From 18th May when restrictions ease further, GoBoat will be taking up to eight people per boat (no restrictions).
