Man charged over fatal boat crash that killed boatie on Murray River

A man has been arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving after an investigation into a fatal boat crash on the Murray River over the weekend, police have confirmed.

A 37-year-old from Gawler South was one of two men onboard a boat which upturned on the River Murray, about 10 kilometres upstream from Swan Reach, about 10:00pm on Friday.

Police initially suspected no other vessel was involved, but now believe there was a collision between the men's 4-metre aluminium boat and another river craft.

A 40-year-old from Gawler East remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police said the 37-year-old died late on Saturday night and Murray Bridge detectives continued to investigate the incident.

On Sunday, police arrested a 39-year-old man from Williamstown who was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing harm by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

He was refused bail and is expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

Two men critically injured in race

Less than 24 hours after the River Murray incident, two other men were critically injured in a race during a water ski event at Robe in the state's south-east.

The two men, both aged in their 30s, were taking part in the Fury on the Bay festival when their speed boats crashed about 2:15pm on Saturday.

An SA Ambulance spokeswoman said both men suffered critical head injuries and were airlifted to hospital in Adelaide.

Ski Racing Australia CEO Cameron McConville said the accident happened during a selection race for the world ski racing championships, which are being held in France later this year.

"Allegedly a boat spun out on the final turn and the boat following it made contact with the side of that boat," he said late yesterday.

"It's too early to speculate if there are any extra safety devices [which] would have changed the outcome at this point."

Mr Cameron said two others suffered minor injuries.

The event was scheduled to continue today, but racing has been cancelled.
