Boat owners left adrift after marina temporarily closes due to coronavirus outbreak

Portishead Marina has been forced to stop access to its berth holders due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Preparations are normally underway at this time of year to get the marina ready for sailors ahead of the Easter holidays.

But due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and the government's strict social distancing measures, the marina has had to temporarily shut, meaning people will not be able to visit their boats.

The marina has just undergone an expansion project to increase the number of moorings to around 300.

A spokesman for Portishead Quays Marina said: “This is normally the time of year that our teams are working overtime to get our marinas open for the season.

“This week, they have been doing the opposite.

“With the sun out and beautiful weather around the country, our teams have been busy closing our sites just in time for Easter.

“This is not something we could have ever envisaged just a few short weeks ago.

“Our decision to close our marinas to customers temporarily has been one of the hardest we have had to make as a business, and goes against everything we believe in.

“With clear direction from the Government, British Marine, the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and in line with the rest of the industry, we have no other option than to restrict access to our marinas until this storm passes."

Instead marina bosses are urging people to follow the Government guidance and stay at home.

Security remains on site 24/7.

The spokesman added: “Our teams are still at work, checking lines and fenders, testing electricity cables, and answering any queries and our team remain in good spirits.

“We want to thank all of our customers for their continued support in this difficult time.

"We all need to act responsibly and together, so that by reducing activity and contact, we reduce the risk of spreading or contracting the virus.”

Bosses at the marina said they would re-open the facility as soon as it was safe to do so.

The spokesman added: “We won’t be closed to customers for a moment longer than is necessary.

“As soon as it is safe to do so, and the government relaxes its restrictions on non-essential travel, we will be opening up again.

“For as long as this continues, we will be doing everything we can to keep boats safe and secure ready to go boating when the travel restrictions are relaxed.”
