Boat dumped by roadside in Edinburgh as fly tippers continue to blight city

A boat has been dumped at the side of a busy Edinburgh road as fly tippers continue to litter the Capital during the coronavirus pandemic.

Locals spotted the small vessel - which had its outboard motor removed and a trailer attached - after it was discarded by the roadside at Barnton Gardens earlier this week, despite environmental chiefs promising a crackdown on illegal disposals.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) promised an “uncompromising” crackdown on instances of waste being illegally dumped following an upsurge in reports as recycling centres closed and the country went into lockdown in March.

Fly tipping website ClearWaste.com reported an 83 per cent increase in cases across the country.

Edinburgh Live was also sent pictures of large amounts of unwanted wood and fencing dumped in a field near Silverknowes Golf Course.

Local resident Tom Wishart, who snapped the picture of the boat, branded it “a disgrace,” adding: “Anyone claiming it would need to bring a set of wheels for the trailer.

“The other rubbish has been dumped just down the road from Silverknowes Golf Course, obviously people are taking advantage of the roads being closed.

“It is absolutely shocking.”

Last month, it emerged police were being dispatched to guard popular fly-tipping sites due to concerns over increased activity.

Fire crews were also called out to deal with an incident when a mound of rubbish in Musselburgh was set alight by vandals.

Recycling centres across the country are currently planning to reopen on June 1 following a meeting of Scotland’s local authorities earlier this month.

City of Edinburgh Council has been informed of the dumped boat.
