Boardmasters music festival in Cornwall cancelled due to severe weather warnings

Boardmasters music festival has been cancelled due to warnings of severe weather conditions.

The three-day event, due to be headlined by the Wu-Tang Clan, Florence And The Machine and Foals, was to take place in Cornwall this weekend. It has a capacity of 53,000 people.

However, organisers pulled the plug after the Met Office warned of wild weather, including heavy rain and high winds.

In a statement, the festival said the decision to cancel was made after speaking with police and independent safety advisers.

The statement said: "The safety of you, the fans and attendees, as well as performers and crew comes first, and the potential risk is too severe for the event to go ahead at this time."

Refund information will be shared "as soon as possible", organisers said.

They added: "We sincerely regret the disappointment to fans, and apologise for any disruption caused to local businesses, performers and crew who were looking forward to Boardmasters as much as we were."

Boardmasters, a live music and surfing festival, usually takes place every year in and around the town of Newquay. It can trace its heritage back to 1981.

Other acts who had been set to perform this weekend included Razorlight, Dizzee Rascal and Jorja Smith.

Ticket holders react to news of cancellation

Thousands of people have taken to Twitter to react to news of the cancellation.

Many commented on the short notice given to ticket holders, some of whom had plans to travel just hours after the announcement.

Ty Walker, who was due to travel from South Wales, tweeted: "Just heard the news about @boardmasters wow that's late in the day to be calling off a whole festival - I understand why for safety but wow. A lot of people are going to be GUTTED."

Emily Smith of Bridgend wrote: "I only decided I was going last week as if Boardmasters canceled the whole thing three hours before our bus leaves."

Others joked that about the cancellation, comparing it to the fraudulent 2017 Fyre Festival which was cancelled as thousands arrived on site.

Liam Knight of Cardiff tweeted: " @NetflixUK 2021: “Boardmasters, the festival that never happened” let’s make a documentary no?"
