Boardmasters festival cancelled due to forecast of 'severe weather'

The Boardmasters music festival has been cancelled due severe weather conditions just hours before it was due to begin.

The event, headlined by artists such as Wu-Tang Clan and Foals, was set to start later today (August 7) in Newquay, Cornwall.

However, organisers have unexpectedly cancelled the three-day festival, leaving thousands of fans disappointed, reports Devon Live .

The official Boardmasters social media pages issued a statement at around 11pm yesterday evening, explaining the festival would not be going ahead due to severe weather conditions forecast.

The post read: "Due to forecasted severe weather conditions, specifically high winds, Boardmasters 2019 has been cancelled.

"Following full consultation with all of the relevant authorities including independent safety advisors, Devon and Cornwall Police, emergency services and the Met Office, a final decision was made this evening.

"The safety of you, the fans and attendees, as well as performers and crew comes first, and the potential risk is too severe for the event to go ahead at this time."

The statement continued: "Refund advice will be shared as soon as possible - please follow Boardmasters’ social media for official updates.

"We sincerely regret the disappointment to fans, and apologise for any disruption caused to local businesses, performers and crew who were looking forward to Boardmasters as much as we were."

Boardmasters, can trace its heritage back to 1981 and more than 50,000 people attended in 2018.

The Met Office has warned heavy rain and thunderstorms could cause 'danger to life' later this week.

The weather agency has issued a yellow warning for rain which covers much of the country and is in place from 12am to 11.59pm on Friday (August 9)

Forecasters say a band of heavy rain, followed by heavy showers or thunderstorms, has the potential to bring disruption and cause flooding to the South West.
