BMW teases new X5 ahead of launch later this year

Fourth-generation SUV to get the big kidney grille treatment and sophisticated suspension for enhanced off-roading.

BMW is surely busy issuing pictures of disguised prototypes!

Yes they are. The first model BMW teased this year was the all-new 8 Series which will be launched as Convertible initially before being completed with Coupe and Gran Coupe derivatives.

Then there’s the X7 which will be a seven-seat SUV to rival the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLS, itself also set to be renewed in next-generation form soon.

And just this week, BMW has issued official pictures of the new X5 undergoing durability tests in South Africa, as well as in Sweden.

In fact, we’ve recently spotted the plastered X5 at the Nurburgring in Germany (alongside the next-gen 3 Series saloon and Z4 roadster) where it is claimed to be a test bed for the hot M model in fourth-generation form.

Has BMW revealed any specs for the new X5?

No they haven’t. However, BMW has mentioned that since the X5 was among the first SUVs to be launched in the luxury car market, they are keen to give the fourth-gen model class-leading driving manners.

Apart from four-wheel steering and the latest in adaptive suspension, the new X5 will come with an off-roading mode to make the driving experience as comfortable and intuitive as possible in all kinds of road conditions.

Although no engine variances have been revealed yet, it’s quite safe to suggest that today’s petrol and diesel sixes, plus the four-pot plug-in hybrid, will make it to the new X5.

And when will it be launched in full?

BMW only says that the new X5 will be unveiled later this year. Actually, the GLE archrival is another SUV from Mercedes that will also be redesigned this year.

Within the next 12 months, BMW fans can expect a flurry of SUVs to be launched. The new X4 has already made its world debut in Geneva earlier this year and will be followed by this X5 and that aforementioned X7. Also, expect the sporty derv of the X5 in X6 uniform.

The latest rumours from Munich suggest that BMW is planning to top its X family with an X8, which would probably be a super-sporty SUV eyeing the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.
