A driver was seriously injured last week when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a traffic signal — causing his vehicle to split in half an burst into flames.

A man was driving a BMW east on Ogden Avenue about 9:50 p.m. Oct. 4 when he struck a traffic signal at Columbia Street in the southeast corner of the intersection, Naperville police said in a statement.

The BMW split in half upon impact and came to a rest off the roadway, where it caught fire, police said.

The driver, a 47-year-old Lisle man who was the vehicle’s only occupant, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said.

Naperville Police Sgt. Derek Zook said investigators have not determined the speed of the BMW when it crashed.

So far, alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash, Zook said.

The Naperville Police Department Traffic Unit responded to the scene to reconstruct and investigate the crash, police said. The intersection was closed until about 5 a.m. the next day.

Police said no citations or charges have been filed in the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the crash was asked to call the Naperville Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 630-420-8833.
