A BMW driver was taken to hospital after 'losing control' of his car and smashing into a Conservative club.

Lea Gate, in Bolton, was shut for several hours following the smash outside Bradshaw Conservative Club in the early hours of this morning.

Pictures from the scene show the damage to the wall of the building, while the BMW was also written off.

Engineers from Cadent were also called to the scene after a gas main was ruptured as a result of the crash.

Pete Wilmot, crew manager at Bolton North fire station, said: "The driver just lost control on the bend.

"He was already out of the car when we arrived. He was taken to hospital.

"We were there for a few hours until Cadent turned up and shut off the gas."

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: "We received a 999 call at 2.41am, reporting a road traffic collision in Lea Gate, Bolton.

"One male patient was taken to hospital with minor injuries."

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for more information.
