BMW driver broke lockdown rules to travel 170 miles for 'break from wife and kids'

Police from across the UK are sharing excuses officers have been given when stopping people breaking lockdown rules.

And one man told police he went on a 170 mile road trip because he "needed to get away from the wife and three kids".

The man travelled across much of the West Country through Avon, Somerset and Cornwall, Cornwall Live reports.

Alliance Roads Policing tweeted: "Taking your BMW out for a spin on a 170 mile round trip to have a break from the wife and three kids is also not an essential journey! The roads are much quieter but there are still people who don't get it."

They also reported a driver for travelling across the county to pick up a boat - then breaking down on a hill.

"Driving across the county (and then breaking down on a hill) to collect the second hand boat you just bought is not an essential journey either. Driver reported near Bodmin."

Police have thanked the public for staying home over the usually busy Easter weekend.

But some people are still not listening.

Police told a teenage driver "popping out for a spliff is not an essential journey" after he was pulled over in Weston-super-Mare over the weekend.
