BMW driver appears in court after car smashed into pensioner's bungalow

A Merseyside man has admitted driving dangerously and damaging property after his car smashed into a pensioner's home.

The emergency services were called out to White Horse Grove in Bolton, Greater Manchester, during the early hours of November 28.

They found a black BMW completely embedded inside a bungalow surrounded by debris including bricks and a radiator.

Pensioner Edna Kerns, 92, was in bed at the time of the crash, which caused the walls of her bungalow to collapse.

Michael Vose, 39 of Mount Pleasant Avenue in St Helens, was later charged with section 47 assault, criminal damage and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Vose pleaded guilty to dangerously driving the BMW X6 that damaged Edna Kerns' home in White Horse Grove, Westhoughton, on November 28 2021.

But Vose denied causing serious injury to Ms Kerns in the incident, during a hearing at Bolton Crown Court on Friday.

Vose also pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm and damaging property in relation to a separate incident on the same day.

Defending Vose, Nicola Gatto said that the full extent of Ms Kerns' injuries are yet to be established.

Judge Tom Gilbart adjourned the case until March 14 and remanded Vose in custody.

Vose appeared on a video link from Forest Bank Prison.

Judge Gilbart said to the defendant: "You are going to be sentenced for those offences which you have admitted but the sentence will be adjourned until the court knows the full extent of the offences for which you are to be sentenced."

The horror smash happened at the approach to a mini-roundabout at Chew Moor Lane's junction with Bolton Road.

Neighbour Jean Partington said she had just woken up when she heard ‘two terrific bangs’.

She said: “I thought it was a bomb.

"I went to the window and couldn’t see anything because it was dark. I could hear a voice crying out so rang the police.

"When I went out, all I could see was devastation. It was frightening."
