BMW confirms M40i performance model for next Z4

Next-gen roadster to feature more agile road manners and a performance-oriented M40i version.

Haven’t they previewed the Z4 in concept form already?

Yes, but this is the first time BMW has revealed the production-ready model, just that some camouflage is hiding its real identity.

One of the highlights of the next-generation Z4 is its more compact dimensions particularly the shorter snout that’s claimed to give the roadster more agile road manners.

The outgoing model boasted a long bonnet for a sporty laid-back appearance, although it faced some criticism from the media about a cumbersome handling.

How powerful is that M40i model?

BMW hasn’t mentioned the specific power of the confirmed M40i model, although it said that M adaptive and lowered suspension and will feature. The brand’s 3.0-litre straight-six is likely to produce power in the region of 350-370hp.

A smaller four-cylinder petrol engine should also come at a later stage in order to secure more sales. Rivals like the Audi TT Roadster and Mercedes-Benz SLC both have entry-level engines to choose from apart from fire-breathing versions.

Will the Z4 get the full M treatment?

At the moment, the Z4 is just being communicated officially with the M40i which will target the SLC43 from Mercedes’ AMG division. But should BMW take the fight straight to the 400hp TT RS, there’s a potential Z4 M that could feature the twin-turbo six-pot used in the M2 Competition, M3 and M4.

The Z4 is expected to be revealed in full later this year and is being developed together with Supra reviver from Toyota. But while the Z4 will be purely a soft-top roadster, the Supra is set to be sold in just coupe form.
