City Hall plans to introduce new regulations on fireworks to improve public safety over the festive season.
It is expected the rules will be introduced within the week, according to Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang.
"We want to enforce the ordinance before Christmas Day. Bangkok needs clear measures to regulate public events this festive season for the sake of public safety," Mr Aswin said without elaborating at a city council session yesterday.
Bangkok New Year celebrations are a well-known excuse for setting off fireworks and ear-splitting firecrackers that unfortunately also cause many injuries and fire incidents.
The rules will be in line with a National Council for Peace and Order order requiring people to seek permission before setting off fireworks, floating lanterns and launching bang fai homemade bamboo rockets, sources say.
The order also requires provincial authorities, including City Hall in Bangkok, to regulate when and where fireworks can be used and how big they can be to prevent accidents.
