Blyth children's play park doused in dangerous bleach in 'mindless act of vandalism'

Children were put at risk by a "mindless act of vandalism" at a Blyth play area, officials say.

A play area on the South Beach estate was doused in bleach leading to Blyth Town Council deploying CCTV equipment on Thursday.

Although the equipment was cleaned "immediately" after the vandalism was reported by police, officials warned a child playing in the area could have been harmed if the bleach hadn't been removed.

A spokesperson for the town council said: "Unfortunately we have received a report from Northumbria Police that there has been bleach poured over the children's play equipment at South Beach.

"We are utterly appalled at this mindless act of vandalism and the partnership team has been deployed immediately to fully clean the play area equipment.

"This could have resulted in serious injury to a young child given that this is a chemical substance.

"The CCTV camera was being redeployed to South Beach play area [on Thursday] following various other anti-social behaviour reports in the past week. We can confirm this will be in position [on Thursday] and any future vandals will be identified."

Locals were asked to report any antisocial behaviour to police, either by calling 101 or reporting incidents online at https://beta.northumbria.police.uk/.../report-an-incident/

Blyth locals who spot any issues or risks in the town's play areas, such as broken glass or vandalism, were asked to report them to the town council, using the email address info@blythtowncouncil.org.uk.
